ed financial | The Associated Press – NHL.com – The Associated Statesmen – NHL NewsEddies goalie Matt Murray was just about done with the first period when the Caps came out and beat the Eddies 4-0 on Thursday night at BB&T Center.
The Eddies started the second period with a power play that was blocked by the Caps, and Murray was all over the ice for an easy goal, getting in front of the net and beating Caps goalie Andrei Kostitsyn.
Murray, who was named the Eastern Conference’s starter for the playoffs after starting the season in the AHL with the Ottawa 67s, was not in the lineup on Friday as he was out with a lower-body injury.
But the goal he scored on the first power play gave the Edds a 1-0 lead.
The Eddies went ahead 1-1 in the second as Alex Kovalev scored on a rebound from a Nick Bonino feed, and it was Bonino’s fourth goal of the season.
Kovalev’s goal, which was his fifth of the year, was his eighth in the last seven games and tied him with fellow Eddies goalie Connor Brown for fourth on the team in scoring.
The Caps, who are in a tie for third place in the Eastern Division with six games to play, lost 1-2 in their first game since March 10.
Bryan Rust, who had two assists and two shots on goal, finished with two saves for the Caps.
The Capitals lost three straight games, but rallied for the win in a 5-2 win over the Islanders on Thursday.
